The Hopetoun Grand Experience is designed as our large scale event offering for groups between 400 – 800 guests. Hopetoun House has been the family home of the Hope family for more than 300 years. The Grounds at Hopetoun include fantastic trails to explore and enjoy the wonderful surroundings of Hopetoun House.

Where would we be without those energetic civic boosters that built Los Angeles? The prolific Charles Fletcher Lummis founded the Southwest Museum, was an editor at the Los Angeles Times, and still managed to design this house (the name of which means “the Sycamore” in Spanish) on the banks of the Arroyo Seco. Its exterior is made almost entirely from river rock and the interior is heavily influenced by Pueblo Indian dwellings. Fans of today’s DIY movement will appreciate the rustic Craftsman charm of this home, which is furnished with hand-crafted wood pieces; it’s interesting to see how closely modern-day bohemian design mirrors that of Lummis House.

Our beautiful State Apartments within the main house are a stunning setting for an intimate dinner for up to 50 guests. They were originally designed and still used for aristocratic entertaining. For larger gatherings the Adam Stables can host up to 150 guests for a gala dinner and the Adam Ballroom can host up to 270. As you approach the house, the impressive panoramic view of the main facade is breathtakingly revealed. Designed by William Bruce and then altered and extended by William Adam, Hopetoun House is one of the finest examples of 18th century architecture in Britain.

Due to the historic nature of the building the most accessible entrance is via the Colonnaides to the right of the main doors. Once inside the ground floor offers step-free access but there is stepped only access to the first-floor bedrooms and central domed staircase. Although the most impressive internal feature is the grand entrance hall which dates from 1752, it’s the outside panoramic view of the main facade that’s most impressive. You’ll be in your element if you’re a bird watcher as there are lots of seabirds in the area courtesy of the nearby Firth of Forth, while animal lovers will enjoy seeing the resident herd of red deer. Both children and adults will love exploring the gardens where a diverse range of wildlife can be found in the 100 acres of fields and woodland, and maps are available to guide you through the many routes that have been laid out. 12-minute drive.South Queensferry is the main departure point for pleasure cruises up and down the Firth of Forth as well as visits to Inchcolm Abbey. One of the main attractions of Hopetoun House is the Stables Kitchen where top-quality Scottish food is served in a modernised stable block that was originally built in the 18th century. The seasonal dishes are sourced from local ingredients and are sold alongside traditional afternoon cream teas and home-baked cakes. The house was built between 1699 to 1701 using a design from celebrated architect Sir William Bruce, but it was extended between 1721 to 1748 into the building that we see today by the wealthy Hope family who acquired the land in the 1600s. Hopetoun House is under the management of the Hopetoun House Preservation Trust which allows visitors to explore the house during the summer months. Guided tours are available seven days a week and there’s no need to book in advance. Hopetoun House is situated on the outskirts of Edinburgh near South Queensferry in West Lothian, where it has been a dominant feature of the landscape for hundreds of years.

Even the layout of the gardens was determined by how they would appear from within the building (e.g. the pond at the rear appears circular from Garden Parlour, but it is actually elliptical). There’s a pond in the back lawn you’ll want to stop at, because the reflection of the house in the water is the most beautiful shot.
